What is rate harmonization?

Rate harmonization means bringing two sets of distribution rates into one harmonized rate so that all Synergy North customers in the same rate class are paying the same for their electricity distribution. This ensures Synergy North customers are paying the same cost for receiving the same level of service.

Why do we need rate harmonization now?

On January 1, 2019, Thunder Bay Hydro and Kenora Hydro merged to form Synergy North Corporation. This meant two sets of rates for each city. With rate harmonization, it will:

  • provide rate stability
  • improve customer service as there will be one rate for each distribution class instead of two
  • reduce administrative costs

How will it impact me?

Rate harmonization will stabilize rates, which means that some customers will have a small increase on their bill while others will see a decrease. When rates are harmonized, all customers in each rate class will pay the same rates regardless of which service territory they reside in with Synergy North.
